Our approach

The objective is to provide love and care for children who have been orphaned or abandoned and cannot be placed with family. Some children can be reunited after a while with family, while others are fostered or adopted. Other children grow up into young independent adults at Rehoboth.

Process

Rehoboth’s approach is designed as a holistic journey rather than a temporary fix. This structural framework guides a child from their most vulnerable state through to independence or family reunification via three distinct stages.

The HIV and AIDS pandemic

The number of children living with HIV or AIDS who are being abandoned is reaching alarming proportions. Instead of the hospital being their home, Rehoboth provides individual family homes to care for the children. In Port Shepstone, Rehoboth has a halfway house for the teenage boys to grow up into independent young adults. For the children that leave Rehoboth as adults, we also try to assist with housing and employment.

Five way holistic approach

Rehoboth’s childcare has an integrated five-way holistic approach. The focus is on individual care for each child as every child is unique and has a different set of needs. Children are raised in family homes with a local housemother and a reliever who care for five children per house. The carer cares for the children as if they are their very own, giving an orphan a new loving family.

  • Spiritual
Daily life is grounded in Christian faith through morning devotions, Bible studies, and value-based upbringing. Children attend Christian schools and are guided by staff to grow with strong biblical morals.
  • Emotional
To help heal the trauma many children arrive with, we identify their specific needs and provide professional support. This includes psychotherapy, play therapy, and occupational therapy to address emotional wounds and restore well-being.
  • Educational
We offer a tailored educational path to help every child reach their full potential. This ranges from on-site early childhood development and primary schooling to external high schools, tertiary education, or skills training.
  • Physical
Children are encouraged to lead active lives through swimming, running, and sports. Our on-site facilities, including a swimming pool, multi-sports field, and jungle gyms, provide ample space for healthy development and play.
  • Medical
We ensure quality health management through regular check-ups and care at our on-site clinic. We are supported by Murchison Hospital, which assists with specialized care, including the ART program.
